Who we are

Signal for Designers is a weekly newsletter and website at signalfordesigners.com, operated by Simone Attanasio, founder of Therapy for Designers.

What data we collect

  • Your email address, only when you choose to subscribe to the newsletter.
  • Anonymous website statistics: which pages are viewed, the referring site, country, and browser and device type. These are collected through Vercel Web Analytics, don't use cookies, and are only ever shown to us as totals. They don't identify you personally.
  • Technical request data, such as IP address, processed by our hosting provider to serve the site and keep it secure.
  • Email engagement: our newsletter provider may record whether an email was opened and which links were clicked.

We don't collect names, payment details, or any other personal information. Giving us your email address is voluntary, but we need it to send you the newsletter.

How we use your data

Your email address is used only to send you the weekly Signal for Designers digest. Website statistics and email engagement help us understand what's useful so we can improve the site and the newsletter. We will never sell or rent your data, or share your email address with anyone for their own marketing. We don't use your data for automated decision-making or profiling.

Who processes your data

We use two service providers:

Both are based in the United States, so your data may be stored and processed outside your country. Where the law requires it, these transfers are covered by our providers' data processing agreements, which include recognised safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.

How we protect your data

Your data is held by providers that use industry-standard security, and everything sent to and from this site is encrypted over HTTPS. Only we can access the subscriber list. If a data breach is likely to put you at risk, we'll tell you and notify the relevant authority as the law requires.

Cookies

This website doesn't set any cookies, and our analytics don't use cookies or follow you across other websites.

How long we keep your data

We keep your email address for as long as you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your data, we remove it within 30 days.

Your rights

You can:

  • Unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email
  • Access the data we hold about you
  • Correct your email address
  • Delete your data
  • Get a copy of your data in a portable format
  • Object to or ask us to restrict how we use your data
  • Withdraw consent at any time, by unsubscribing or emailing us
  • Complain to a data protection authority: in Australia, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner; in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office; in the EU, the authority in your country

To use any of these rights, email us at the address below. We'll reply within 30 days. We'd appreciate the chance to sort out any concern before you go to a regulator.

Children

Signal is written for working designers and isn't directed at children under 16. We don't knowingly collect data from children.

Legal basis (GDPR)

If you're in the European Economic Area or the UK, our legal basis for emailing you is consent: you opted in by subscribing and confirming through the double opt-in email sent by Buttondown. You can withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing. Anonymous website statistics and technical request data are processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in running a secure, useful website.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. If a change affects how we use your email address, we'll tell subscribers in the newsletter.
